Pneumonia (ICD: J12-J18)

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the tissue of the lungs, which is generally caused by bacteria - more rarely by viruses or fungi - and occurs more frequently in the cold months of the year. After transmission by droplet infections, the pathogens penetrate into the lungs and lead to an inflammation in the tissue there. The risk of contracting pneumonia is particularly high in persons with a weakened immune system and elderly persons as well as in children. Around 300,000 people suffer from pneumonia in Germany every year, and it is the most common infectious disease in the world.
