Herniated vertebral disc (ICD: M50-M51)

A herniated vertebral disc or slipped disc is a disease of the spine - often caused by wear - in which parts of the disc are displaced into the spinal canal. The deformed vertebral discs change their position and press on the nerves radiating from the spinal cord. In rare cases, the spinal cord itself may be affected. The pain resulting from a slipped disc affects in particular the back, neck or shoulders, but may also radiate into the legs, feet, arms and hands.
