Femoral neck fractures (ICD: S72)

A femoral neck fracture (fracture of the neck of the femur) usually occurs as the result of a fall and particularly affects elderly people. 45 % of the almost 100,000 patients in 2007 were over the age of 80 years. The second most common cause of femoral neck fractures, the majority of which are suffered by women, is osteoporosis. Beside taking appropriate medication, prevention includes exercises and age-appropriate sport - as long as no fractures are present.
